You may saunter into an un-touched older home to find yourself in a sea of cottage rose wallpaper, and it may even be lining the interior of the cabinets and drawers! And really you probably feel like you could put on some 3D glasses and have quite a nice show while you’re there. Wallpapering your entire home it is definitely a defining staple of previous generations! Which, most of us probably have the natural inclination to turn our noses up at the thought of wallpaper because of this stereotypical use of wallpaper, but when used in the right setting and in the right manner can really be quite a nice, creative, and interesting touch.
When it comes to wallpapering, or other interesting wall finishes and colors, it can easily be overdone! But you can definitely create a nice accent wall with wallpaper, paint or many other creative applications. Accent walls can be a very creative, and interesting addition to any home, but you do have to consider the components of style and other items used in the space. Creating an accent wall is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to make a statement in your home or create I higher level of style. Some people just say ‘paint it!’ While this is true there can be other interesting methods to creating that feature. AND, even easier than changing the paint color in an entire room is just changing one wall! This will aid in accentuating a focal point as well as designate a specific intended use.
Wallpaper accent walls give you so many more options on what pattern, colors, style etc. you can incorporate into your design, but you do have to be careful not to create pattern chaos in your space! Some items may compete instead of support you intent. In addition to sporting a deeper color, pattern, or texture, the accent wall can be theme oriented as well. If you would like to showcase that family heirloom collection of thimbles (or pottery or artwork) it can be come an accent wall as a whole. Washing the wall with lighting will also lend toward distinguishing the area even more.
While many techniques can be fantastic design elements in any room, there are situations where it can be over-done in which case it will become more of an element of surprise rather than an element of design! We all know times that we’ve walked into a room and our first reaction was ‘whoa’. We don’t strive for a whoa, we strive for a WOW!
