One of my favorite things to do is update our home décor seasonally. My furniture is mostly neutral making it easy to switch out pillow covers and accessories for a fresh new look for each season.

The changing of seasons outside is a perfect reason to change your décor inside.  Decorating your home year-round can be fun and easy when you embrace the benefits each season offers.  The best way to incorporate the season into your home is the use of design touches that can change as easily and as quickly as the seasons themselves.

While you may love the lush lilacs and blues of spring and summer or the bright reds and greens of the holiday season, making them the foundation of your design may not feel cohesive year-round. When you start with a base of neutral colors on walls and in furnishings, adding colorful and seasonally appropriate accents is a breeze.

Lighting is one key element in design that is often overlooked but should change with the season.  In fact, it is amazing how great lighting can change a room.  Most rooms benefit from a mixture of overhead lighting, floor lamps, wall sconces and table lamps. You can incorporate seasonal trends into your lighting design using lamps.  Starting with a classic, neutral lamp base, you can easily switch out the lampshade as the seasons or trends change.

Bringing seasonal flair to your floors is as simple as adding or removing area rugs. During winter months, rugs in rich tones can warm up a room when wood floors tend to feel cold.  For spring and summer, adding a bright floral piece will create a fresh airy feel.

Window treatments are another quick and easy way to create a seasonal look in your home.  In the winter, when you want to keep out the chill, choose heavy drapes in colors that inspire warmth and comfort.  For the welcome sunlight of spring and fall, lighter sheers can be appropriate. In the heat of summer when you may rely on blinds to block the midday sun, softer, lighter fabrics will soothe the utilitarian appearance of blinds.

Just as you change your wardrobe to welcome each new season, updating your décor will make your home feel welcoming and comfortable.
