Introducing Benjamin Moore’s 2017 Color of the Year: Shadow

Benjamin Moore announced its 2017 Color of the Year on Wednesday, and if you were disappointed by 2016’s plain vanilla pick, Simply White, you might be pleasantly surprised.
The 2017 Color of the Year? Shadow, a deep, saturated purple.
“Allusive and enigmatic, Shadow is a master of ambiance. It is a color that calls to mind a ‘past,’ yet it can also make a contemporary, color-confident statement,” Ellen O’Neill, Benjamin Moore’s creative director, said in the announcement. The hue is part of a bolder “Color Trends” palette that Benjamin Moore says reflects consumers’ newfound level of confidence in using deeper, saturated colors.
“I love it. It’s sophisticated, warm, and fresh. I can see it in a library or a small office. It would make a room feel cozy,” says designer Ally Banks of Ally Banks Interiors in the District, who is using the color on chairs, accent pillows and stools in a current project. “I think it’s a good choice for today.” When using such deep colors on the walls, she likes to also paint the molding, baseboard and window trim the same color for a cohesive look.
Banks said she sees modern designers moving away from all-white rooms, which can seem cold without colorful furniture, art or accessories. “A paint like this one could make a space feel complete.”
